The Kargbo Family

My husband, Jeff, and I visited my home in 2013 when this picture was taken. Unfortunately, my mom wasn’t in it because she didn’t like saying goodbye. And my older sister, Fatmata was home with her, as well. In Sierra Leone, if you posed for a photo, smiling wasn’t encouraged. Pictures were a serious business. But, they were a little sad that I was leaving again.

My dad, Alimamy, my little sister Hawa who’s standing in front of me, my brother Patop, my sister Yabu, my brother Ali, and my sister, Lucy. My parents had ten children. I have two brothers and seven sisters. Two sisters have passed away.

My sister, Kadija who’s holding my cousin’s baby and my sister Hawa.

We had a great time catching up after thirteen years. It was great seeing them, but I still was afraid. War memories haunted me. As much as I enjoyed visiting them there, I was actually happy to come home because I missed my children.

Someday, I’d like to go back and visit, but my dad has passed now, and I hesitate to bring my children there for fear of unrest in the country, still.

I talk to them once in a while, and everyone is doing well. Many times, they ask when I will return. Maybe soon. We’ll see.

Until I was five, we lived in Moyamba, a small farming village. I loved it. But, as you’ll read in my book, all that changed. After the civil wars, my family moved to Waterloo because the farm was destroyed, and my dad was too sick to rebuild it.

I was closest to Fatmata, my older sister, and Yabu, who I know shares the Christian faith with me.
